M27 the "dumbell" is a planetary nebular in the constellation Vulpecula and lays 1,250 light years from Earth. The extremly hot blue-ish dwarth star at the centre of the nebular has entered the latter stages of its life cycle and has thrown off its outer layers of atmosphere leaving this expanding cloud of gas and dust.

M57 the "ring" nebular is another planetary nebular seen this time from end on, seen from the side it would possible resemble M27 above. M57 is in the constellation Lyra and is 2,300 light years from Earth, the "parent" star can be seen at the centre of the nebular
